Samuel B Roberts was a John C. Butler class destroyer escort. A rather small vessel designed for screening and anti-submarine work she was never intended to fight enemy surface ships armed with only 3 torpedoes, and two 5-inch guns. During the battle off Samar in 1944 Samuel B Roberts would face off against the biggest battleship ever put to sea. Alongside the Destroyer USS Johnston, Samuel B Roberts would manage to fend off the massive enemy force baring down on her though she and Johnston would both be lost in the process.
