Appearing in the later 40 or 50 Century AD. A convex rectangular shield made of wood, glue, and a layer of canvas and calf skin.
A metal rim protects the edges of the shield from splintering, and an Iron or bronze shield boss in the center that can deliver devastating defensive blows and stop projectiles.
The scutum was the most prominent feature and constituted the primary protective armament of a roman legionarie.
