The Sumter Class was originally designed as an export Frigate by Bath Iron Works in an attempt to recoup losses inured by the less than profitable Zumwalt class. However the US Navy was so impressed with the design proposal that they quickly domesticated the project. The Sumter made use of many advancements initially intended for the Zumwalt with the Navy's approval. These included a 155mm Railgun, The M11-23 20mm CWIS, The AN/SEQ-3 Laser system and advanced A-AESA Radars. Coming in at a cost of $730 million per ship the Sumter was considerably cheaper than either the Zumwalt or the Arleigh Burk Flight III, this was mostly due to its small size, modular construction and streamlined production. 17 ships wear ordered in 2026 with a further 12 in 2029.
