Asset Overview
The amphitheater of Alba Fucens, located on the San Pietro hill, was built after 38 AD after the death of Nevio Sutorio Macrone, prefect of the praetorium and prefect of the vigili, positions he held during the rule of the Roman emperor Tiberius. On the death of the latter, Caligula soon forced him to finish, despite the initial deep friendship. Macrone would have taken his own life to avoid the requisition of the goods. Through a will, he was able to donate a part of his possessions to build an amphitheater in his hometown. The structure was partially hewn out of the rock of the colle di San Pietro, one of the three hills surrounding the ancient city area, and partly fitted with masonry recovered from the pre-existing domus.
