Architectural detail from the Step Pyramid Complex of King Djoser at Saqqara, 3rd Dynasty. This shows how they recreated architectural elements from wooden and other organic structures in stone. These "wooden pegs" would have served to hold together the earlier wooden structure the building is meant to represent, but here are reproduced in stone as a non-fuctional visual element.
