Asset Overview
The **Column of Marcus Aurelius** is an Ancient Roman victory column located in the present-day Piazza Colonna, in Rome, Italy.
It is a **Doric** column with a spiral relief, which illustrates the victory of the Roman emperor **Marcus Aurelius** over the Marcomanni, Quadi and Sarmatians in the year **176**. The narrative progresses as the spiral moves up the column, depicting scenes of Roman soldiers on the march, making camp, assembling, and constructing fortifications, in addition to numerous battle scenes. At various points, the emperor, Marcus Aurelius, addresses his troops.
The bronze sculpture atop the column is a non-ancient addition by the Catholic church, which carried out a restoration of the column in 1588. The bronze depicts **Saint Paul**.
