**Acheulean hand axe** Location: Abbeville, France. Period: Lower Paleolithic (before 300,000 years ago). Material: flint. Dimensions: length, 135.8 mm; width, 67.9 mm; thickness, 42.7 mm. Notes: Catalog no. 518a2. This specimen is part of a larger collection of artifacts that was acquired in 1929 by James Bell Bullitt during a tour of western Europe and later donated to the University of North Carolina.
