Barbara Corbett died on November 19, 1871. She had been born in 1794 in Scotland. I have been unable to find any details of how she ended up in Santa Cruz or what she did while she was here. This tombstone was recently mended and set back upright.
Her name is spelled "Barbra" on the stone and "Barbara" in the newspapers. My guess is that the second A was omitted from the stone in order to save money or space. I have seen missing letters on the Kitteredge ("Kittredge") monument and a few others. I suppose it's also entirely possible that spelling of names was accepted as more fluid back then, or that stone masons simply made errors.
