Asset Overview

This carved stone artifact with lines and grooves is similar to other fishing net weights found in this part of the state, and may well have functioned as one, though the incised lines suggest it may have alternatively been worn as an ornament or pendant. It is made out of a soft type of rock called soapstone, or steatite. It was probably originally part of a carved stone bowl and repurposed when the bowl broke. This artifact was found at a multi-component site (31WA2199) in eastern Wake County, NC. It measures 3.3 cm long, 1.9 cm wide, and 1.15 cm thick and weighs 14 grams. This model was constructed by David Cranford with 65 photos using the Agisoft Metashape software. (Credit: NCDNCR/OSA)
