Asset Overview

Cefn Y Castell Hillfort is located on a steep ridge above the village of Middletown on the border between Wales and England. It is often overlooked by visitors to the area who tend to head for the more prominent Breidden Hills immediately to the north. Very little is known about the hillfort archaeologically with no recorded excavations and no recent surveys. It consists of a single defensive ovoid bank with prominent inturned entrances at the south west and north east ends. There is a clear outer enclosure at the west end and a suggestion of another on the east side. Both entrances have outer defensive banks and ditches. The highest rocky point within the hillfort appears to include a former stone cairn which is badly eroded. Hut circles can be seen on the grassy slopes with good examples at the north east end sheltering behind the rampart
