Asset Overview

There are obvious cup and ring marks on this rock, taken to be rock art. however, there is also evidence that quernstones have been extracted at different periods. On the top of the rock to the S there appears to be an early stage quern roughout in place. Directly beneath the cup and ring marks is a bowl where a quern has been extracted and there is a cut out section of rock to the NE at the bottom of the outcrop where a quen extraction has taken place. Unoticed before, there is a small boss on the SE corner of the outcrop wich shows some worn tools marks around its edge. It stands slighly proud of the top surface of the outcrop suggesting that the whole surface has been reworked and lowered. If correct, this would mean that the 'cup & ring marks' post-dates this reworking and suggests that the rings may have a more prosaic explanation than as being rock art.
