Asset Overview

Anglo-Norman defended homestead constructed c. 1200-300 AD and known locally as the 'Pound Fort'. Some moated sites may have served as defended farmsteads, others as medieval barns and some as earthwork castles. This is one of 16 moated sites in County Offaly. Earthwork stands on elevated land with good views of the surrounding countryside, in the townland of Curralanty (Churrach an Leantaigh/the marsh of An Leantach, possibly a Kilkenny surname) near the village of Shinrone, Co. Offaly. Earthwork consists of a trapezoidal-shaped platform enclosed by a low earthen bank with raised rounded corners and a wide flat-bottomed fosse with slight evidence of an outer bank on southern side only. Possible ramped entrance off centre to south on the west side of the platform. This monument stands on private land and there is no access to the monument without the landowner's permission.
