The Red Rock District of the Coconino Forest was awarded the 2017 Chief's Award for Fostering Volunteerism and Service. The national level award acknowledges the Forest Service and Friends of the Forest development and implementation of new technologies to assist in protecting and preserving the forest. The application of 3D photographic models in the documentation and evaluation of archaeological sites is one of those techniques being used.
