One of the most remote and dramatically sited Roman forts in Britain, the small, three-acre fort at Hardknott (Cumbria, UK) enjoyed command of the Eskdale Valley and the Roman road to Ravenglass. The fort was established early in the second century AD.
This is the eastern of four internal guard towers located at the corners of the fort, which have no entrances at ground level.
