Carved head of Zeus or Poseidon dating to c 320-330AD. This is carved from stone known as “Imperial Porphyry” which was quarried in the Eastern Desert area of Egypt during the 1st to 5th Centuries AD. Thought to be a Roman copy of a now-lost 5th century BC Greek bronze original. Gifted by Sir William and Lady Constance Burrell to the City of Glasgow, 1944.
