Head of Zeus

Carved porphyry head with hair bound in a slender plait knotted at the forehead and beard. Both the hair and beard have been treated in a schematic manner. Roman copy of a 5th century BC Greek bronze, dating from circa 320–30 AD. Gifted by Sir William and Lady Constance Burrell to the City of Glasgow, 1944.
