The displayed Iron Maiden is a replica made in Japan in 1932. Its supposed model, the Iron Maiden of Rothenburg, exhibited in the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum, did not originally contain the iron spikes that now occupy its interior; those are said to have been added later. Current studies claim that the Iron Maiden was used as an instrument for public humiliation.
