Asset Overview
An unusual spoked wheel motif was found on a rock surface in the forest to the north of the Ballochraggan rock art group by George Currie in 2009. Despite a number of searches by the ScRAP project team, this had not since been re-located.
I visted the potential site on Boxing Day 2021 to find that the recent storm had uprooted a number of adjacent trees, exposing a large area of bedrock, with a number of cup marks being clearly visible. I cleared and cleaned the rock surface and, in the process, came across the spoked wheel motif. A second spoked wheel symbol was found, with the two motifs lying at either side of an elliptical depression. There are a further 19 cup marks scattered over the rock surface, with about eight of these bearing one to three rings. There are a number of elliptical solution hollows on this surface and these may be relevant to its selection by the prehistoric artisans who created them.
Note : this is a preliminary model made in poor light with surface cleaning not completed.
