**Topographic map block w dipping planes**
This wooden block (14.6 x 14.1cm) features a sequence of brilliant white alder boards inter-layered with thin veneer of cherry and quarter sawn English brown oak. The layers of veneer create the illusion of a topographic contour map on the carved surfaces. Regular contours are outlined by lighter layers of cherry veneer. Every fifth contour is an index contour interval that is highlighted with brown oak veneer. The block is cut by four, 1/8 inch thick layers that range in attitude from vertical to shallowly dipping. Students can use these planes to practice using intersections with contours to calculate strikes and dips. The block is also bisected by a thin vertical trace of black African wenge veneer that students can use to construct topographic profiles or geologic cross sections along.
