Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines – a Roman brick. This broken brick was found at the Friends burial ground behind what is now the HSBC bank. Note (1), the slice taken from the brick by the builder’s/excavator’s shovel and (2) the paw print made while the freshly made brick was put out to dry. The museum has a similar brick with a paw print on display. Was it the same batch of bricks, or did all Roman pets make a habit of running across bricks put out to dry?
