Asset Overview

Tarquinia was once one of the most ancient and important Etruscan cities. Nowadays it is well known for its outstanding Etruscan tombs, for which it was awarded with the UNESCO World Heritage status. In 1875 a very sophisticated anonymous sarcophagus was discovered in a tomb of the Monterozzi necropolis. The deceased lies with his head lifted and leaned to his left hand. The right arm, wrapped on its side, clings to a patera and next to his feet still lies his dog. The lower part of the sarcophagus is decorated on all sides with relief friezes. The scenes on the long sides are of mythological content, while on the short sides warriors ride on quadriges. The preference for moving and fluttering skirts gives a clear reference to the classic Greek world, therefore the sarcophagus can be dated at the end of the 4th century B.C. The model of the Sarcophagus, displayed at the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale de Tarquinia, was generated with photoscan from 102 photos taken by a Lumix DMC-TZ61.
