This closer look shows some cut lines to control water use by leading to the next hole below the ones above. Carving rocks is not common in this area. Acorns are bitter due to tanic acid that can be soaked out in water. It takes seven soakings with stages of grinding and draining in between. This fact was considered to a curse on the women who prepared the daily acorn meal, and that was a main staple food. The acorn mush was cooked in woven baskets heated with hot rocks taken from a fire. Two or more women would grind acorns here for their familie(s). The next camp of ten or so people would be within eashot 100-200 meters in two directions from here.
