The Refugio is an active member of the biological corridor Amistosa, a government project that connects national parks with one another to expand habitats and to ensure the survival of animal species threatened by extinction. Our tree nursery currently produces an annual supply of 2,000 seedlings of endangered tree species for the reforestation of the corridor. In order to advance the biological corridor further, we have developed concepts that are intended to convert the destructive monocultures into profitable and biodiverse polycultures (so-called food forests).
Currently, we are carrying out pilot projects with several landowners. We work in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment (MINAE) and are supported by the Fundación de Parques Nacionales, Amistosa, and Osa Conservation. We see all of our activities as part of a larger system. In addition to addressing the ecological aspects of the challenge, we also take the social and economic components of the environment into consideration. Thi
