Asset Overview

These rock particles are actually many broken marine shell fragments. The shell fragments of this particular rock measure are on the lower end of coarse with an average size of 0.08-0.16 inches (2-4 mm). However, there are a large number of rocks of this type containing even larger sized shell fragments. Shell fragments are loosely fit together and held in place by a poor likely calcite-based cement material holding the entire rock together. Shell fragments on the lower end of coarse size like those displayed in this rock tend to give it an appearance and texture similar to a granola bar when viewed at arm's length (you may need to zoom in). While it is evident the rock formed in the ocean it doesn’t have a salty taste to it. When a drop of acid is placed on either the shell fragments or the cement material holding the rock together it rapidly effervesces (bubbles and fizzes) dissolving rock. rocksandminerals CC BY(4.0) via sketchfab [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode]
