Asset Overview

The Whitney Granodiorite is a porphyritic granodiorite with megacrystic K-feldspars. This 83 Ma unit underlies Mt Whitney and is one of a group of Late Cretaceous granitoids that makes up the last major episode of plutonism in the Sierra Nevada batholith. For scale, the large K-feldspar megacrysts on the front of the model are 5cm x 3cm. Collected at Whitney Portal, above Lone Pine, California.
