Fresh Human Heart Organ Donation

This is a fresh human heart that was donated for research. The donor was a 49 year old female with a history of epilepsy and no known cardiac conditions. This model was collected by filling the heart with a white foam and then suspending it by alligator clips to facilitate 3D scanning. The atria (top chambers) of the heart are partially dissected prior to arrival because when transplanting other organs, certain parts of the heart might be included in the dissection to try to improve organ viability. While no longer a perfect anatomical specemin, this model highlights the colors of a fresh human heart and the variability in epicardial fat (the yellow section of the scan).
