Asset Overview
Surcouf was a French Cruiser Submarine designed and constructed for the Marine Nationale. Laid down in July 1927. launched in November 1929 and commisioned in 1934. She would be one of the first submarines to feature both a gun turret and aircraft facilities, which in turn pushed her displacement to approximately 3250 tonnes when surfaced. The submarine managed to escape France during ww2 and reach the UK just as France fell under German occupation, wherupon it competed its refit and was handed over to the Free French Navy, which operated it until the night of 18/19 February 1942, when about 130 km north of Cristóbal, Panama the Surcouf had disappeared under various surcumstances.
