The ** *Capella Altemps* ** is located to the left of the main altar of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The Chapel was commissioned by Cardinal Marco Altemps, and completed in 1587.
The two paintings on the side walls commemorate the Council of Trent, and the campaign against Protestantism. The fresco on the ceiling depicts the *Assumption* (central oval).
Of note is the painted icon of the Madonna della Clemenza (Our Lady of Mercy), potentially one of the oldest icons depicting the Our Lady (dated to, at the latest, the early 8th century and arguably 5th century). The icon is an encaustic panel of three cypress boards, depicting the Madonna and Child between two angels:
