Asset Overview
**Gian Lorenzo Bernini** and his workshop.
*Modello* for the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
This prepatory study for the *Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi* in Rome's **Piazza Navona** was completed around 1650 by Bernini and his workshop.
The model is made of wood, slate, terracotta, and plaster, with traces of gilding and color.
Artists often submitted *modelli* to design competitions, in addition to drawings, in the hopes of winning prestigious commissions.
The Fountain of the Four Rivers is so-called because of the four lounging river gods, each of whom represents one of the great rivers of the world: the Danube, the Nile, the Rio de la Plata, and the Ganges.
