Asset Overview

The St. Mary's Church, probably first a wooden church, was founded in 1028 by Stephen I of Hungary, the first Christian king of Hungary. The church was destroyed in 1042 during the campaign of Emperor Henry III. against the Hungarians. After that, the emperor rebuilt it. The church was consecrated to St. Mary and the martyrs Mauritius and Laurentius and became imperial property. The church today consists of three parts. The three-aisled Romanesque nave is said to have been built in 1213 by the brothers Alban and Johann Dörr. The tower in the west was built in the mid-14th century in early Gothic style. To the west is the single-aisled, highly Gothic extension from the end of the 14th century. Coats of arms of the Dörr family decorate the tower and the choir. Several times the church was damaged over time. In 1529 the place was destroyed by the Turks, which also affected the church. In 1570 a lightning struck the church, in 1774 a fire broke out on a forgotten candle. ![](https://www.noe-3d.at/SF/marien.jpg)
