Asset Overview
Monk Bretton Priory, near Barnsley (South Yorkshire, UK), was founded in about 1154. It closed in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and was swiftly plundered for usable building materials.
The model shows the large 13th century administrative building. The upper floor, which was rebuilt during the 17th century, may have housed the monks' manorial courthouse. This was where they would receive rents from tenant farmers and settle manorial disputes.
