Honorary grave dedicated to the Austrian historian and diplomatic Engelbert Mühlbacher (1843-1903) at the Döblinger Cemetery in Vienna's 19th district. On a thick Romanesque column with a capital with an owl and cross stands a lion above a slain dragon.
Mühlbacher was born in Gresten, Lower Austria, the son of a blacksmith. In 1872 he studied history at the University of Innsbruck. In 1881 Mühlbacher became associate professor of medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences in Vienna. In 1896 he was appointed director of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research. In July 1903, at the age of 59, he succumbed to heart failure as a result of an infected lung.
