Asset Overview
An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5, flat wing type, Western Group), c.f. Mackreth 2011, 5.b4.Plate 50, of Roman dating (AD 80 - AD 120).
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present consisting of the upper part of the bow and wings. The lower half of the bow, foot, spring and pin are missing. The brooch is T-shaped in plan and the wings are semi-cylindrical. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile. A rectangular groove is present at the reverse of the head along the length of the wings. This still contains the spring, with a minimum of four coils each side. The wings have a flat wing cap, with a circular perforation for the spring axis bar. The bow extends from the head and tapers to a broken terminal which has a well developed patina. The foot is missing.
