Asset Overview

The concrete base and metal turning-cog for a World War II era spotlight, one of many that lined the runway at Oakington Airfield. The airfield was home to the first four-engined heavy bomber, the Short Stirling, as well as other aircraft such as Blenheims, Wellingtons, Lancasters, and Mosquitoes. The base was also home to No. 7 Squadron, whose crews received more than 500 gallantry awards and carried out a total of 546 operations with 165 aircraft lost – the third highest losses in Bomber Command. All war graves are located in Longstanton, where personnel from the airbase lived, and are honoured with a memorial window in Longstanton's All Saints' Church.
