Asset Overview
The Sioux Quartzite is a Proterozoic quartzite that is found in the region around the intersection of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, and correlates with other rock units throughout the upper midwestern and southwestern United States. It was formed by braided river deposits.
This model is of a blocky outcropping in the channel of the Big Sioux River, just north of the falls at Falls Park. The outcropping is known colloquially as “Lone Rock.”
At the time I made this model (April, 2022) the river was very low from drought as the higher water line shows. Much more of the rock base was visible. The veins and striations of different deposits that make up the rock can be seen easily in many spots. It is located at: 43°33'29"N 96°43'16 W
