Asset Overview
An incomplete Roman Colchester derivative brooch of Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4.g, flat wing ends type), dating to AD 160-200.
Over 75% of the brooch is present, with the pin missing.
The wings are semi-cylindrical in plan with pierced wing/end caps intact. The end caps extend slightly beyond the diameter of the wings. The wing caps have been decorated with a central groove. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. At the reverse of the head is a groove which would have retained the spring. A rearward facing hook is present as a rectangular knop at the top of the bow, this would have held part of the spring.
